The England midfielder Must Drop the Nonsense to Secure a Central Position Under Coach Tuchel.

For Bellingham to hopes to force his way back into the English best starting eleven, the smart move to do away with the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted after noticing that he was being shown following a night of uneven play in Tirana fell short of expectations.

"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stick to my words 'behaviour is key' and consideration for the teammates who enter the game," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them when you're on the field."

The midfielder must understand. There was no need for an outburst. The captain had just put the national team two goals ahead in an inconsequential fixture, there were six minutes left and he, after a below-par performance, was just shown a yellow for bringing down the Albanian striker. It was not a debatable decision. Actually it would have been unwise for the manager to keep Bellingham on the pitch considering there was a risk the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the World Cup by getting a another booking.

Turning the Spotlight on Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. It was impossible to miss the 22-year-old’s annoyance as he realized that he would be substituted for another player. His arms went up in exasperation and while he accepted the coach's hand on his way to the sideline it was clear that the manager did not appreciate it.

This is the challenge that Bellingham must overcome. He congratulated Marcus Rashford for delivering the cross for the captain to head in his second of the night, but the rest was self-defeating. There was no chance complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has talked so much about respecting team hierarchies and the value of acting professionally.

Under Scrutiny

The midfielder, omitted from last month’s squad, is being watched carefully since coming back to the fold in the current camp. Essentially he was being assessed and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to coming off the pitch as England rounded off a ideal group stage by seeing off a feisty challenge from Albania.

The Coach's Plan

It means it's unclear on whether England perform optimally including Bellingham. The performance was open to interpretation. Some new ideas were tested from the manager in the beginning. Under him, England have gained the squad organization and direction in recent months, using a holding player, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and specialist wingers, but the approach changed against Albania. The young defender was handed his international debut, the midfielder was in the starting lineup at this level and the role of Stones as a makeshift midfielder created a faint echo to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.

A Game of Two Halves

Bellingham had ups and downs. He made a chance for his teammate after the break but at times seemed overly eager to shine. He made many hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent at the beginning. England's play was messy after halftime. One Albania chance resulted from Bellingham squandered possession. The yellow card came after he lost the ball from Broja and fouled Broja.

Depth Makes the Difference

Finally the bench quality proved crucial. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who seemed more comfortable to the position that Bellingham had played during the first half, and Saka. Later Saka provided a corner kick for Harry Kane to break the deadlock. This served as a reminder that corners and free-kicks will be crucial at the World Cup.

Bridge Still Stands

Still, though, all talk was about Bellingham. The quality of Rashford’s assist for the second goal was a little lost due to the fuss of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, the focus was on him. The coach approached behind him and guided the player towards the travelling England fans. Their relationship is not broken. Tuchel is not willing to abandon Bellingham yet. Yet whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him centre stage remains in doubt.
