Blast Takes Three Police Officers Amid Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who ran away following the explosion was found soon after. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.
The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
Property Situation
The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Negotiators had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings caused the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno told the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the Interior Minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the incident included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
